If things go bump in the night how long would it take you to get ready?
Most men empty their pants onto their dresser or similar before going to bed. Speed up your ability to get out the door in any emergency by leaving everything in your pants and putting them somewhere you can get to them quickly.
This is another reason I strongly suggest carrying a flashlight at all times in a pants pocket.
Always know where your pants, a flashlight, and a firearm are so that you can get to them quickly and easily in the dark.

AA/AAA/C/D batteries are going to be the first to go. Consider devices which can run on 9V, CR123, CR2032, and N batteries. While these batteries are more expensive at least if you find yourself in a pinch the battery is more likely to be available. These batteries are generally stocked at most convenience and grocery stores; however, are not so popular that people are likely to buy them up in an emergency.
Solar landscaping lights are a great lantern alternative. If the power goes out place the light outside in direct sunlight during the day and bring them in at night to use as a lantern.
Most of these lights use either AA or AAA rechargeable batteries which, once charged, can also power other devices.
